JEWELRY TREASURES BLOG - WHAT IS RHODIUM and HOW DOES IT WEAR?

Have you ever wondered exactly what RHODIUM PLATED means in the world of Costume jewelry?  How many times have you seen Rhodium ep  or Finished with Rhodium.  Well let me share my research on the subject.

RHODIUM
is a wonderful metal alloy that Royality used to use to make their crowns and special jewelry. Rhodium is a chemical element that is a rare, silvery-white, hard and chemically inert transition metal and a member of the platinum group.   It is one of the rarest precious metals, and the most costly. Rhodium is a hard, silvery, durable metal that has a high reflectance.  Rhodium metal does not normally form an oxide.

White Gold  is often plated with a thin rhodium layer to improve its optical impression while Sterling Silver is often rhodium plated for tarnish resistance.  Rhodium is often plated over jeweler's brass (a mixture of alloys that jewelers use that hold plating quite well) .  Choose Rhodium electroplated (ep) when buying good quality costume jewelry as it holds up much better than many other metals, retains it's shiny surface and wears longer.

So..  don't be afraid of Rhodium!!   It is your friend in costume jewelry.   Many of the rings in my inventory in Z Best Treasures is plated with Rhodium.   Check it out  - you'll be glad you did!!
