Wereke has been employed medicinally by various ethnic groups in Northwestern
Mexico for many centuries. Early European explorers in Mexico such as Ignatz
Pffeferkorn, for example, learned of this plant’s antiseptic action on the skin, from
various natives of the states of Sinaloa and Sonora (Weidauer and Rojas 2002; Vázquez
Wereke’s application for the treatment of diabetes appears to be more recent, although
little information exists as to the extent of time it has been employed internally as a
hypoglycemic agent by Mexican traditional herbalists, especially in the States of
