What Is The Best Way To Clean Your Stud Earrings?

All of us want our stud earrings to look as beautiful as the day you bought them (or received them, if they were a gift). But how can you achieve this without taking them to a professional all the time? Aren’t there any cleaning methods that you can implement yourself? The good news is that the answer is yes – read on for cleaning information and tips.
Classic Method
This is a straightforward method that is suitable for most stud earrings (such as the cheaper pieces you wear everyday).

  1. Place your earrings into a small plastic container and fill it halfway with peroxide.
  2. Let them soak in the solution for 10 to 20 minutes (they can be soaked overnight if they’re especially dirty).
  3. Remove the studs from the container and use a small jewellery brush or toothpicks to scour away any remaining dirt.
  4. Set the pieces on a piece of paper towel and let them air dry completely before wearing or storing them.
For more expensive earrings (those made from gold or silver and containing precious gemstones) should be cleaned using the following method.
  1. Fill a medium sized bowl with a cup of warm water and a quarter of a cup of ammonia. Put the studs into the solution for 20 minutes.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, remove them from the solution and put them in a second bowl of fresh water with a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid.
  3. Scrub the earrings gently using a soft toothbrush or jewellery brush until they take on a shine (try to get into the crevices).
  4. Rinse them in a third bowl of warm water before laying them on a soft cloth. Once dry, polish with the cloth.
Some metals will lose their shine and begin to appear dull if not cleaned properly. This is true for silver, so use the following method.
  1. Line a small glass baking pan with aluminium foil, ensuring that the shiny side is facing upwards.
  2. Place the earrings onto the foil. Note that you can clean several pairs at a time with this method.
  3. Fill the pan with warm water, ensuring that the studs are completely immersed.
  4. Sprinkle a handful of baking soda over the top. Keep adding it until a chemical reaction has occurred.
  5. Leave the studs to soak in the baking soda and warm water solution for a full hour.
  6. Rinse them in plain water and towel them dry with a soft cloth.
Other Tips
We have a number of additional tips that you can utilise when it comes to cleaning stud earrings and helping keep their sparkle.
  1. If your silver studs have settings with jewels glued to them, do not use the silver cleaning method. Instead use a cleaner and soft cloth.
  2. Pearl jewellery should never be cleaned with harsh chemicals; a solution of mild soap and warm water should be sufficient.
  3. Never wash your earrings over a sink; using a small bowl will prevent them from getting lost down the drain.
  4. Avoid wearing them to bed, when you shower or whilst swimming to lessen the accumulation of dirt and damage.
We hope that you have found the above article useful in determining how to go about Cleaning your Diamond stud earrings. If there is something different about your earrings (such as the metal or gemstone), it is best to consult with a professional to ensure that cleaning won’t inadvertently damage them. They should be able to offer advice and suggestions on how to proceed.
