OMHS alumna takes fashion knowledge to NYC

When it came to starting her career after college, Courtney Maddox said she didn’t expect to end up in New York City.

“I went to University of Alabama, and I was studying fashion merchandising and business,” the Oak Mountain High School graduate said. “I never had New York on my mind at all really, except for an internship.”

But after she graduated from Alabama in 2015, New York is where she ended up.

Maddox works as a sales professional for an Italian luxury brand on Madison Avenue. Her company has a strict no-advertising policy, so she could not share the company name.

Zara Comes Under Fire for Copying Indie Artists Designs

Zara is coming under fire for its latest foray into shameless copying. Indie artist Tuesday Bassen, whose clients have included Playboy, The New Yorker, United Nations, Nike, and Adidas, among others, took to her Twitter account on Tuesday to call out the Spanish fast fashion giant and shed light on its unauthorized use of her copyright-protected work, including an array of original pins that Zara has allegedly copied and affixed to a number of styles of garments.

why no one's talking about the best show of the year

Impossibly handsome … Dominic Cooper as the murdering criminal-turned-preacher.

If you had to choose a year to release a TV adaptation of a violent and profane comic book, you would probably choose 2016.

The Walking Dead, despite being an interminable mirth-vacuum, still gets the kind of viewing figures usually reserved for moon landings and halftime-show wardrobe malfunctions. Marvel’s Daredevil proved comic book TV doesn’t have to be a joyless chore, as did its twin sister, Jessica Jones. And let’s not forget that the biggest show in the world – the one discussed equally by academics, footballers, Michael Gove and your mum – has dragons in it. Actual dragons.

How to bring a touch of the '90s to your winter wardrobe

There comes a time in every young queer’s life when they are struck by lightning.

For me, that time comes on a brisk spring morning in rural Oklahoma, when I’m standing behind the middle school, waiting for the bell to ring for first period. Two people are standing with me: Matt and Patrick, both of whom I consider friends. But it’s complicated. They’ve been acting differently around me lately. Sometimes they suddenly stop talking when I walk up to them. They smirk. They know something I don’t. It makes me nervous.

Today, I’m wearing a green John Deere tractor shirt and jeans that are one size too big.

“Hey,” Matt says to Patrick. He nods in my direction. “Talk to him about shirts.”

Amanda Casarez grew up in California helping her mother sew and create patterns for clothes. She made prom dresses for herself and her friends, and now she wants to share her designs with the world.

Casarez said her clothing line is an “advanced contemporary brand” with bold, linear designs for women.

“[The clothes] almost have a menswear or masculine approach to them,” she said.

Casarez lives in the Washington, D.C., area with her husband who's stationed at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia. She is a designer-in-residence at the D.C. Fashion Incubator at Macy’s Metro Center.

Analysis: Goodell is the winner in long-running Deflategate saga

The Deflategate saga has seemed endless since arising from the NFL’s determination that the New England Patriots used improperly under-inflated footballs in the first half of the AFC title game at the end of the 2014 season. Tom Brady, the Patriots’ four-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback, played the 2015 season while appeals of his four-game suspension by the league made their way through the federal court system.

But it appears the end is near, with Wednesday’s decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit to reject Brady’s request for a rehearing of the ruling by a three-judge panel of that court that reinstated Brady’s Deflategate suspension.

Brady and the NFL Players Association fought the CBA. The CBA won.

Conversations: How a Convention Is Like a Wedding

The Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

No nomination is ever entirely uncontested,” Jill Lepore wrote in The New Yorker earlier this month; “the only question is what form the contest will take—sound or fury.” Dr. Lepore, a staff writer at the magazine and a professor of history at Harvard, has spent a lot of time thinking about the sound and fury of nominating conventions past. In a recent interview, she explained how the events became what they are today, the why the “convention bump” may not apply in 2016 and how a convention is like a wedding.

What’s the purpose of conventions today?

To choose a candidate, to decide on a platform, and to fuel the spirit of party.

Can you say a little more about fueling the spirit of party? What does that mean, exactly?

Stellar growth reduces problem of long-term joblessness

The number of long-term claimants on the Live Register has fallen by 22,656 or 13.6 per cent in the past 12 months, figures from the Central Statistics Office(CSO) reveal.

However, they also show that those claiming benefits for more than a year still accounted for 45.5 per cent, equating to 143,832, of the total register in June, down from 46.7 per cent a year ago.

The numbers reveal two things: firstly the current spate of employment rich growth is reducing the incidence of long-term joblessness.

Though it should be noted that long-term claimants on the Live Register are not the same as long-term unemployed, as the former can work part-time while claiming benefits.
