5 Lessons an Aging ‘Project Runway’ Can Learn

Fashion will always be fascinating, as Project Runway has proven with its reality competition about designers struggling to make it to fashion week with hopes of prominence within the industry.

First premiering on Bravo in December 2004, Project Runway eventually switched over to Lifetime, which recently aired its 14th season and is nearing the end of its fifth All Stars season. The show, which has seen its ups and downs (season 11’s team edition is still unforgivable), has become a reliable hit, if not, uninspired in recent years. Co-host and mentor Tim Gunn even slammed the main competition’s most recent season, telling Entertainment Weekly he “hated it.”

Fashion brands from South Korea, China and Japan are becoming serious rivals of their Western peers as Asian consumers become increasingly confident in their own style and take pride in buying home-grown labels.

Asian consumers are the world's biggest spenders on high-end fashion, representing around half of total buyers.

Most of them are under 35, Internet-savvy and increasingly on the hunt for small, cool, original brands that will make them stand out and look different from their parents, fashion executives and retailers say.

High quality is no longer the preserve of Western luxury brands, fashion experts say, and Asian brands are attracting attention as they experiment with new textiles and materials, facilitated by their local manufacturing base.

BAD NEWS, TERRORISTS

predator drone

Even decades after the last bombs fall or shots are fired, historic battlefields are still dangerous. The problem is undetonated explosives and mines. Up until now, there was no inexpensive way to find them, but researchers at the University of Wisconsin at Madison have found a way to do just that.

The technology, developed by the university’s Fusion Technology Institute, looks for signatures of explosive material or other objects by shooting out a small stream of neutrons at a given target from a small device mounted on a drone.

In addition to finding explosives, researchers say the technology could be used to locate persons trapped beneath building rubble in the wake of a natural or man-made disaster, or employed by miners to locate valuable mineral deposits much quicker than conventional methods.

How Prince Defined Fashion on His Own Terms

As the world mourns the loss of one of its brightest stars, it’s only natural that we begin to dissect his influence on pop culture through his many expressions of creativity. Beyond being an incredible music genius, creating his own sound that drew powerful inspiration from themes of sex and religion, Prince Rogers Nelson did something much braver. He refused to conform. The mystique that is Prince was fed by his refusal to become anyone’s version of ideal. And with 5-inch heels, he strutted through the stratosphere, fueled by an unapologetic force of purple fervor.

Recommended review of Administrative

STON — With a simple voice vote after a brief discussion Wednesday, Northampton County Council members kicked off a process that could shift the balance of power in county government for years to come.

Members of the Governance Committee recommended council seek bids to hire legal counsel to review the Administrative Code. The document dictates how county government functions by dividing the government into departments and assigning each one duties.

The code also spells out how contracts are awarded and when those contracts must get council's approval, and shifting that power could change the dynamic between council and the executive.

Johnny Coca leads British label Mulberry’s comeback with bags of attitude

Until two months ago it had been more than two years since Mulberry last staged a fashion show. The British fashion and accessories brand was left rudderless when creative director Emma Hill departed; then a new CEO, Bruno Guillon, made the ill-fated decision to reposition the brand with rapid expansion overseas – at a time when the Chinese market was looking especially lucrative to European designer brands – and then raised the price of its handbags. It was a disaster.

The brand ignored its core customer in Britain, where the receiving of one’s first Mulberry handbag is a rite of passage for a teenager, and 2015 pre-tax profits plummeted 87 per cent.
