Could anyone recommend an affordable ipv6 capable switch for my home lab. I have been considering the small 8 port 2960 models, but most of the have the LAN lite image that doesn't support ipv6. I'm looking to spend 300$ or under.
My plan is to buy 2 1841's with IOS 15, two 3560s or one Cisco Catalyst 2960 and one 3560. I am a last semester netacad student and will be losing access to the campus lab that has several 1941's and 2960's. The 1841 will be slow but affordable from what I gather. We don't use 3500 series at school. Right now I am focusing on CCNA level equipment for study. I can buy CCNP/IE stuff down the road.
Would this be adequate?
You really need a 3560 for that, or a 3750. Some of the protocols that you will need to use during the certs (I forget exactly what, but google knows) cannot be broken out from the trunk through a 2960; it doesn't support them.
I prefer the 3750 over the 3560 because then we can play with stacking them as well. I bought two 3750v2-24PS-S for my lab, along with a few other cheaper ones. Note the v2 - they have more flash than a standard 3750 and can take IOS v15.
You have a good budget to build a lab there. 1841s are great routers in a small, quiet package. 2811s give more capability to add modules though, like voicemail, wireless, IPS etc. when you need it.
