What do you do before you buy something?

I go to Google and type in the item I am looking for and then click on shopping to compare prices. If I don’t see the item there or I want more comparison prices, I usually type in reputable websites that I am pretty sure carry the product.

This is the same process I go through before selling online.

I am a drop shipper of pet supplies, fragrances, and camping gear and before I post anything online I always make sure I check Google to see what the average prices are in the market.

You can’t go out there blind!

Now with this data in hand, I don’t just rush right to dropping my prices below everyone else’s.

After narrowing down the cheapest options (usually the top 3), I then go deeper and look at:

1. Shipping prices

2. Stock

Do your visitors come back for more?

All too often when starting a company, businesses are so concerned with gaining traffic and bringing clients to their site. We just need them to show up! What do we need to do to get them to visit our site?

Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the most important pieces to the entire puzzle, but if those visitors don’t come back, then what good was all your work in getting them there in the first place?

Don’t make the mistake and concentrate on just one aspect of a visit.

You might be able to bring new visitors to your website, but if you are not getting their attention and making it easy for them to understand your business within the first 3 seconds, you are going to lose them.

And I promise they will not come back.

Don’t make the mistake of waiting until you are frustrated to begin analyzing this trend.

When are taking chances wrong?

The answer: Never

When is too much failing, just… well too much?

The answer: Never

Failure is only a reality when you decide to give up. If you tried something and it didn’t work, but you got back up and tried something new again, that’s not failing. That’s persevering. And you need to do more of that. WE need to do more of that.

If more people would just persevere and stop quitting, this world would be a better place. We would be a nation unified through opportunity because we never quit, we just tried “new” whenever something didn’t work. We would have even more ideas and inventions than we do today.

Your business, friendships, relationships…they would all be better. You would be better.

Your business is doing well and it looks like your user base is growing. It’s been a few months and new users are signing up every day and transactions are beginning to come through.

You are excited that people are attracted to your website and for the most part everything seems to be running smoothly, when suddenly analytics indicates you have hit a plateau. Should you be concerned? Maybe it’s just a slow day.

It could be just a slow day and maybe you shouldn’t get too concerned, but you can’t ignore this.

This is a critical time for you - take this time to review, analyze, adapt, and evolve, because in a blink of eye your users could be gone and this “slow day” could actually be the beginning of an all too common trend in new businesses…their death.

Know your customer, and then be them

Congratulations.

Do you like to take risks? Have new ideas?

If you have answered “YES,” then you are an entrepreneur.

But you are not alone. You have now just joined the millions of people today who have decided that it is time they create something of their own.

The difference though for you is that you are actually going to do it, right?

I only ask this because most people just end up scratching their heads and continuing to work for someone else and just dreaming about leaving and doing it on their own. There is nothing wrong with this philosophy, but if you really want to do it you need to be committed to your dreams and take some risks.

I hope you are like me.

I have found myself spending countless hours on the computer way after my work day has ended.

As I write this, I remember spending late nights watching re-runs on television or even reading a book, but now I can’t help but check my Facebook and Twitter status constantly. I can’t help but be updated by Mark Zuckerberg’s social invention or Biz Stone’s incredibly simple idea of telling people what you think. And let’s not forget Tom at Myspace who has slowly faded off into a forgotten place as the "new kings" of the social space rise to new heights. Where is Tom nowadays anyway?

Too many times researchers are thinking about the next big idea that will revolutionize the way we do business. They want to take big risks, because they dream big.

They also look to design the product or service and launch only when they are 100% sure it is done. Don’t mean to burst your bubble here, but let me tell you something - it will never be done. Why?

Because your product and service needs to be tested, accepted and used, then corrected, tested again, and then tested some more before it is 100% complete. Only a handful of companies have been able to get it right the first time. This is the reason most companies go beta first, sometimes private beta and then public beta. They take their time tweaking their idea, carefully listening to user feedback and making adjustments where needed.

There had to be something better than this.

It wasn’t just one thing that got us thinking.

It wasn’t just the complexity of selling on eBay. Not just the overcrowded space.

Or the fact that Anthony and I just couldn’t make any money selling on eBay.

We were selling basic items and walking away with a dollar or two on every transaction. Are you serious? One dollar? Believe me. We asked ourselves the same question every day for 2 years.

How could we really work from home selling on eBay if we couldn’t make any money doing it?

There had to be something that would allow us to sell online and actually turn a profit. I wasn’t asking for the world here, but just something in return for my work.

But it was more than just that. We wanted more than what was there.
