Keeping True to Yourself in the New Year

keeping True to Yourself in the New Year

The new year brings us many changes both personal and professional. This blog is going to focus on the personal.

Most of us are putting our resolutions together with the strong hope of being able to keep them; however, most of us will give up because we either don’t really want to keep our resolutions, someone else is telling us what our resolutions should be, or we just don’t have the strength and/or motivation to be able to keep our resolutions.

Well, instead of making resolutions for the New Year, I have decided to make a pledge to myself for each “resolution” that I want to strive for.

In this blog, I am going to share with you how I plan to do that.

My main pledge is that I want to live a healthier life, so what I am doing is making a list of everything that I can think of that will help me accomplish my goal. For example, my list goes something like the following:

My Pledge To Live A Healthier Life

  1. Choose to stop drinking soda.
  2. Choose to stop eating fast food; take out or otherwise.
  3. Choose start walking (if you can’t walk very much, set yourself a minute goal and increase it by 5 to 10 minutes every day).
  4. Choose to park farther away from any store entrance (this should be categorized as unscheduled/bonus walk time).
  5. Choose to spend an hour or two of “me” time every day (this can be reading a book, taking another walk, taking a long hot bath or shower, window shopping, going to a movie; anything you desire, but it has to be something that you enjoy and will make you happy).

My list is more extensive than this, but you get the idea. I haven’t set any specific dates of accomplishment because, for me, it puts too much pressure on myself, but if you need to set a specific date of accomplishment, then by all means do so; you are your own task manager, so only you will know which method works best for you.

Don’t plan to accomplish each thing every day; just do one thing at a time, if you need to. If you put too many demands on yourself, you are sure to fail, but if you just attempt one pledge at a time, you will soon develop a habit of either not doing or doing that particular pledge and you will be able to cross it off of your list and go on to the next one.

Remember to set reasonable goals/pledges, write out  a workable plan, work diligently on each item by sticking to your plan, so that you can reach your ultimate goal/pledge. And don’t use anyone else’s list as your own, unless it pertains to what you want to accomplish. Using someone else’s list or desires for your pledges/resolutions for yourself is a sure way to fail. You have to be passionate about what you want to accomplish or it just won’t happen.

And, most of all, when you accomplish one of your pledges, reward yourself with something that you have been craving and/or wanting. It can be as simple as a date night with your significant other at the local ice cream parlor or your favorite restaurant or it can be much more than that; it is totally up to you. For your rewards, I suggest finding a picture of what you want your reward to be and printing it out and putting it on your bathroom mirror, so you can look at it every day to keep inspired.

In closing, I wish each and every one of you the healthiest, happiest, and most prosperous New Year ever. And whatever you do in life, always be true to yourself .

Excellent advice -- if you set a goal too big, it's hard to get that first step taken. But if you set it step by step, you know what you need to do.

Happy New Year -- and beautiful blog page, by the way!

I really like the way you made your list very specific. You didn't just state that you wanted to lose weight, you stated exactly what you are going to do to get there.

Happy New Year!

Thank you for stopping by. Yes, get it on paper; that way you can refer to it. Another option would be to put it on your computer in a table format, so you can check your progress and cross things off as you go. Or, if you have outlook or another program that sends you reminders, you could put your goals in there. You could also randomly program encouragement remarks to be sent to you, so when you might be having a bad day, you would get a reminder of encouragement :-)

Thank you Sue ~♥~ It really is important to be specific and have a plan. Just like our businesses, we have a plan and we need to implement it, so that we can achieve success :-)

Very good and I already do the five things that you mentioned. So many of us could change so many things, but will we? Thank you for writing this blog

~♥~ Thank you for stopping by BeewitchingItems ~♥~ Yes, so many of us could change so many things....; for the better, I think. I know I will. My plan is to add one more thing to the list each time I am confident that I have accomplished one of my goals, so my list will probably go on for eternity because there is always room for improvement ~♥~
