Why Travertine Flooring is a Good Substitute to Hardwood Flooring

Wood may be aesthetically pleasing as flooring, but it is not the most durable material there is. In fact, it is prone to rotting and deterioration if not properly cared for. Hence, if you are changing your floor or having your home built for the first time, you may want to consider using a more durable material, like natural stone, as an alternative to hardwood flooring. Travertine is one of the best natural stones used for flooring. For centuries, it has been used to build some of the world’s most remarkable monuments, including the Roman Colosseum and the Lincoln Memorial. When used as flooring, travertine tiles will provide an elegant and timeless look to your interiors, while ensuring higher value to your home.
Travertine flooring will last for generations, unlike most hardwood flooring that typically lasts only up to two decades. Moreover, unlike hardwood floors, travertine floors require minimal maintenance.  You will still need to clean the tiles periodically, but not as often as you would have to clean wooden floors. And because travertine is made of stone, it is highly resistant to scratches, chips, and cracks, and it can easily stand a lot of foot traffic. Weathering may occur to the stone, but that just adds more character to your floor, giving it a rustic and sophisticated look and feel.
Hardwood flooring may provide a rustic, old world look for certain applications, but travertine tiles can do that, too. Travertine flooring in a brushed and chiseled finish will provide that kind of look, while ensuring durability and low-maintenance. If you want an elegant flooring, go for travertine tiles in a honed and filled or polished finish. Hardwood floors can be limited in their applications, but travertine flooring is not. In fact, you can use it almost anywhere in the house, including your kitchen and bathroom. Tumbled travertine tiles are particularly great for kitchens, especially if you want a versatile and timeless look.
Wooden floors are quite limited in style, color, and finish. With travertine flooring, you get a lot of options in those aspects. Hence, you should easily find the right shade or finish that will go perfectly with your interior design. If you are feeling creative, you can combine two different types of patterns to achieve a bold and unique look for your floor.
