Daylight Savings Time ends Sunday, November 4, 2012 Spring ahead, fall behind, ooh that extra hour! It's addoTime!

For many, the time clocks will switch back an hour this weekend.  For the United States and Canada, we will follow next weekend on Sunday, November 4.  It's time to change not only the clocks but batteries in smoke detectors and if needed carbon monoxide detectors, all good safety minded tasks to implement. What time is it?  It's addoTime of course.

What does it all mean?  I never really understood the 'savings' anyway.  For me, it means it is dark very early in the late afternoon/evening.  Fortunately, I do not have a long commute.

My mother used to love this time of year, because she would say, I can't wait to get that hour back.  For many, we seem to be tired and lagging until we do indeed get the hour back.  It's a sacrifice I guess.  For about...  Read More

The World Series and the First Snowfall

As they are just starting the National Anthem for Game six of the World Series, we are getting the first snowfall of the season in New England.  The 1st snow is always pretty and somewhat magical.

by comparison, this is from last winter, a heavy snowfall season.
This kind of snow is treacherous to drive in, a royal pain to navigate and
horrible to shovel.  Have a blessed and safe winter!

One-Pie and the Great Pumpkin

One-Pie brand Pumpkin is now available for making Pumpkin Pie for Thanksgiving in New England is a staple.
This August, I sold a can on addoway, for a photo shoot in Yankee Magazine.    It is in the October/November issue.  Shown is a small photo which is in the corner of their spread about One-Pie and pumpkin recipes.
The magazine is published in Dublin, NH by Yankee Publishing, which also owns the Old Farmer's Almanac and focuses on New England, food and travel. It's been around since the thirties.

One-Pie Pumpkin

I don't think it is online, only the print version, which a colleague of mine brought to me today.
Still do not have the One-Pie Pumpkin in stock, but do have squash.  Waiting any day now for the Pumpkin.

Marathon Cooking Day and Boston Baked Beans

Today was a marathon cooking day.

Boston Baked Beans are a staple in New England.  It used to be Saturday nights was franks n beans for dinner.  Many breakfast shops sell baked beans on Sunday because they were made on Saturday night. I grew up with having baked beans this way.  We also had cold baked bean sandwiches with mustard on white bread, but some people had it on Brown Bread.  Toasted brown bread is delicious with just butter.

So, yesterday I soaked my navy beans (pea beans) in water overnight. Then, today,  I rinsed the beans, then put in the West Bend Bean Pot with salt pork, water, seven swirls of molasses, (that's what my Mom said), a quarter of an onion, some salt.  I set the oven to...  Read More

Confession, I don't like Halloween

I don't why, but I don't like Halloween at all.  I sell candy and party supplies,  so I should like Halloween, right?

I do not offer much in the way of Halloween Candy because most of the candy is well, sub par, except for maybe Reese's Peanut butter pumpkins.

I love Christmas, I love Easter, Fourth of July and most other holidays, but for some reason, I just don't get Halloween.  I have no rational reason for disliking this holiday.  I mean, I had fun as a kid going around the neighborhood.  As a parent, the school parties were chaotic and crazy, but it was fun.  I love the fall, love football, cooler weather, pumpkin pie, apple cider, and toasting pumpkin seeds, but just not Halloween.

What is Wegman's grocery store?

Shopping for a living encompasses much of my life.  I shop for those items you cannot locate in your area.  I'm basically thrilled to learn there is a Wegman's in my area, just opened today.  I did not go to the grand opening, but am going to get there this week.  All I hear is rave reviews from this store, so for my occupation, this might be a breath of fresh air.  We have great stores in my region, don't get me wrong, but I have not had the Wegman experience, so I am told.  Food shopping may never be the same, they claim!  Here's some of the glowing reviews they received.  One of the recurring ones, I am seeing is the fabulous Customer Service.
