Micro-Batch Canning and Preserving: Cranberry Mango Jam

Piccolo Giardino Homemade Cranberry Mango Jam

RoyalPresence_1_586b63.jpg  It's nearing the end of summer proper and have been canning traditional recipes for
preserving from nature's bounty, much of which is from my 'little garden', hence the name Piccolo Giardino.

This pairing took on a little different twist.  As mangoes were on sale at the local market, (we have many tropical and Brazilian fresh produce), I bought six of them.  Around that time, I had a notion to clean the freezer. Last winter, I bought many bags of cranberries.  Cranberries freeze so very well and can be used in anything whether it be breads, muffins, jams, jellies, salads, or cooked with meats.  I had four bags left.  I defrosted them and put through the colander to sort out any that weren't fine.

Then, made cranberry vinegar with oranges.  This is so...  Read More

Teach a man to fish

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

~ Lao Tzu

Well we are talking about men, women and children here.  If you help others learn to help themselves and empower them to learn, discover and apply the principles taught, then you have given them a very worthy gift indeed.

When you feel the urge to be caring, altruistic and helpful, just try to remember if you want to truly help, try to educate them, give them a skill, assist in learning new technologies, empower them to be the same type of caring and independent person you are.

Back to Basics - Save Energy Dry Clothes Outdoors

Another Go Green idea.

Thanks to Microsoft ClipArt From addoway
Just another little insight into the way I am.  I hang all the clothes outdoors.  I have done this for ever, but not always and everyday.  It wasn't until the dryer broke, that I decided to use this energy saving method all the time.  I didn't want to buy a new dryer.

Benefits of drying clothes outside:
  • Smells so sweet, no need to use those artifical stinky manufactured chemical concoctions.
  • No electricity or alternative energy used, other than manual labor to hang.
  • Fabric, clothing last longer.
  • Towels are super absorbent.  Some people may not like the 'stiffness' of the towel, compared to dryer processed, but you will get used to it, considering  how you will feel really dried off.

Making Wreaths for anytime and Christmas gifts

Some of you may know about the herbal vinegars I've been making and the jams and jellies.
I got my packaging down for Cranberry Jam and then the packaging for the Italian herbs.    I decided to go with simple labels and outer wrappings.  While I'm waiting for the bottles to arrive, which should be next Monday, I decided

to make some wreaths to hang on the door anytime, give for gifts and, also for Christmas.

I wanted to go with the natural theme, so for the first one used some real seashells.
Also, I love the beach, gardening and crafts, so this is a natural extension of my passions.

The next ones I am making are from beach grass that is in my garden.  It was getting overgrown and it's too hot to divide and transplant, so I made some cuttings and it is drying.
Here are some of the ones upcoming in...  Read More
