Giving 101 Kahlil Gibran knows the Holiday Spirit

One of my favorites is "You give but little when you give of your possessions.

It is when you give of yourself that you truly give." from Kahlil Gibran

The Prophet.

In fact, that quote is what I used for my high school yearbook, many years ago.
I still love the sentiment.

I put together a little video with the whole excerpt on giving.
Not finding an appropriate Christmas song, I used a version like James Taylor of "You've got a friend".

Love Thee, Notre Dame and Manti Te'O

Love Thee,  Notre Dame

It's Game Day for Notre Dame this Saturday.  Always a fascinating time where
College Game Day and ESPN is on campus.

Michael Fernandes

This Saturday, Manti Te'o's family will be visiting. See the video where he speaks on his tragedy.

The original Fighting Irish

Fighting Irish
Anyone who has a student at Notre Dame, knows what it is like to visit the campus to see their child.  And any student who has family visiting knows what it is like to have family visit.  It's been many years since I made the trek to ND to visit and watch a game at Notre Dame Stadium.  I can tell you it is an experience that is absolutely unforgettable.

Manti Te'o has been through some real hardships the last few months and has played like a champion at Notre Dame.

So many of Notre Dame students do the same each and every day.  The...  Read More

Teach a man to fish

“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”

~ Lao Tzu

Well we are talking about men, women and children here.  If you help others learn to help themselves and empower them to learn, discover and apply the principles taught, then you have given them a very worthy gift indeed.

When you feel the urge to be caring, altruistic and helpful, just try to remember if you want to truly help, try to educate them, give them a skill, assist in learning new technologies, empower them to be the same type of caring and independent person you are.

Saving the dolphins

On a gorgeous beach in Brazil, captured on video, dolphins were helped by the beach goers to get back to sea.

Incredible and inspirational, just came across this today on Earth Day.  Humans saving the beautiful dolphins so they didn't get beached.

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall

yBC9cq1330558606.gif

What would we do without a mirror as we step outside to venture into the world each day?

What if we couldn't check our hair, our clothing? What if we had our shirt on inside out or mismatched socks?  Do we see ourselves through the eyes of others?

I listened to a speech years ago at the University of Notre Dame for First Year Orientation. I still remember the emotions and tears from listening to the touching oratory.    The speaker was Keri Oxley and her speech is located here. It is very long, but worth it for anyone to take the few moments to read.
...here's an excerpt.  But to truly understand one really needs to read in entirety to grasp the context.    I was really moved hearing her speak with such genuine emotion and compassion.

Ash Wednesday, Lenten Season Begins

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Roman Catholics and other Christian denominations.

Believers will turn to a period of prayer, fasting and alms giving during the forty days prior to Easter Sunday and looking forward to the Risen Christ.  In some ways, similar to Day of Atonement, where individuals reflect on personal past sins, transgressions.  Lent ends on Holy Thursday, when the Easter Triduum begins.  On Ash Wednesday, Christians receive ashes from the priest in the shape of a cross to signify repentance.

In our worldly every day life we instinctually prepare for Spring and renewal.
Perhaps we want to be more giving, maybe shed some extra pounds or do some spring cleaning, get the house ready, and prepare seeds for sowing in the garden.  We want...  Read More

Hello friends and new acquaintances!

One of my favorites and in my office on a plaque - Not sure to whom I should  attribute the quote. From addoway royalpresence

Life is so fragile, and with the help of others am trying to just do my part and help others too.

If you can help, I'm just extending some random acts of kindness and could use your help.

You might know someone who is going through a hard time, you might be that someone.  You might know someone who is just having a bad day.  You might be that someone. Life is very fragile.

Carry your Candle, Go Light your World!

I played this song in a class I was in training for Hospice.

This song means many different things to each person who listens.
To me, this means to bring our talents, gifts and strengths to others who need, want or do not have those same capabilities.  Please listen to the video.  Kathy Troccoli is the singer.

Hospice helps those who are terminally ill.  Many patients are not enrolled in Hospice until the very  end of life, but Hospice can begin much earlier, but families are not educated enough to help their loved ones that soon and perhaps are in denial.

I entered the Hospice class to train as a volunteer a few years after my mother's death.  Death and dying bring the family dynamics to the forefront.  It's very helpful to be compassionate and caring, but also know what is happening.

As a Hospice Volunteer,...  Read More
