An abandoned mall in Bangkok has been overtaken by fish - The Verge

By Carl Franzen

There's something particularly eerie about an abandoned shopping mall. Perhaps it's the stark contrast from its intended purpose: to see such a sterile place once designed to entice throngs of shoppers into its doors, now so completely devoid of any human life, dilapidated and darkened with time. It's basically the very definition of post-apocalyptic. But in the case of the (now ironically named) New World shopping mall in Bangkok, Thailand, abandonment by humans doesn't equate with lifelessness. The mall, which reportedly caught fire in 1999 (rumored to be arson by a competitor), has since flooded with several feet of water and become a paradise for koi and catfish.

As seen in these photos from chef / travel writer Jesse Rockwell, the resulting "urban aquarium" is at once delightful and surreal. Rockwell writes on his travel, photography, and food blog A Taste of The Road that someone deliberately introduced the fish into the vacant mall, but ...more

NASA launches Mars 'flying saucer' on Earth - AP

Associated Press

After several weather delays, NASA on Saturday launched a helium balloon carrying a saucer-shaped vehicle high in Earth's atmosphere to test technology that could be used to land on Mars.

Since the twin Viking spacecraft landed on the red planet in 1976, NASA has relied on the same parachute design to slow landers and rovers after piercing through the thin Martian atmosphere.

The $150 million experimental flight tests a novel vehicle and a giant parachute designed to deliver heavier spacecraft and eventually astronauts.

Viewers around the world with an Internet connection followed portions of the mission in real time thanks to cameras on board the vehicle that beamed back low-resolution footage.

What Star Wars Is Really About - Business 2 Community

Before sharing this great insight from Business 2 Community, we must note that some grown-up male just bought two of these 6" Storm Troopers from us...and they were not cheap! Amazon actually set the prices, and we hope that he/his recipients will enjoy them a lot! We want to thank #Addoway, too, as this blog helps the spiders find us on other sites as well.  We love Addoway!

Some of us grew up on Star Wars! My brother-in-law was in the Air Force and those fly-boys could not get enough of the special effects 'missions' -- which were actually much like their simulators...and remember those fancy joy sticks!  One of my sisters had just adopted a llittle boy..she'd read a book that sometimes adoptive children like to change their names to maybe their new Dad or Granddad's names. When she asked Jamie if he wanted to change...  Read More

Fruits and vegetables important for health but don’t lead to weight loss: study - RelaxNews

Relaxnews

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham have found that increasing fruit and vegetable intake does not lead to weight loss, despite decades-old popular belief.

A team of investigators performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of data of more than 1,200 subjects in seven randomized, controlled trials to explore the weight loss effects of increasing fruit and vegetable consumption.

"Across the board, all studies we reviewed showed a near-zero effect on weight loss," says study leader Kathryn Kaiser, Ph.D., instructor in the UAB School of Public Health. "So I don't think eating more alone is necessarily an effective approach for weight loss because just adding them on top of whatever foods a person may be eating is not likely to cause weight change." ...more

Mini-Bots Are Helping Scientists Control Tiny Objects Under A Microscope - Tech Crunch

by John Biggs

Imina has created tiny little robots that can be used to help scientists and researchers manipulate tiny objects under a microscope, giving them a tiny helping hand when looking at very small objects.

The video above, filmed by AtoZNano, shows the miBots in action. They’re controlled via a joystick-like interface and the tiny probe can measure wires and nanotubes and can even help out in medical situations.

These tiny robots are obviously going to be expensive for the average user, but I could imagine a similar robot that could help electronics hackers control their projects at a microscopic level and move small parts around a PCB or bread board. The little robot could act as a helping hand and help steady solder points and builds with its tiny probe. Cool, cool stuff. ...more

Nestle takes step toward customizable vitamins - Reuters

Reuters

(Umm, maybe they will come in their Hot Cocoa Mix!)

LONDON (Reuters) - Nestle said on Monday it was working on a new research project
that could one day lead to the development of made-to-measure vitamin combinations tailored to an individual's needs.

Nestle, the world's largest food group, said its Institute of Health Sciences was working with Waters Corp to develop tests that would efficiently measure the amount of vitamins in body fluids such as blood or urine.

Such tests would then be used to build a picture of a person's nutrient status and to offer supplements tailored to certain needs.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the company could eventually offer such supplements through a device similar to its Nespresso coffee machine, though that could take years to develop. ...more

5 Applications For Graphene, The 'Wonder Material,' That Could Change The Way We Live - Business Insider

Business Insider

The University of Manchester

The "super material" isn't ready yet, but it's going to make future technologies so awesome.

Graphene, the pure carbon material that's just one atom thick and nearly transparent when laid out in sheets, manages to be roughly 200 times stronger than steel, even though it's 60,000 times thinner  than Saran Wrap .

Graphene is also an excellent conductor of energy, can be synthesized from unique carbon sources — anything from pencil lead to  Girl Scout cookies  — and it has thousands of possible applications.

How is it possible for one material to have so many ideal characteristics? When you search "graphene" on the web , the most common picture you'll see is a molecular lattice that...  Read More
