What if there was a private and secure way you could securely sync and access your files from anywhere - even without an internet connection? You wouldn’t need the public cloud.

That’s what we envision in our concept of the world’s first Wearable Private Cloud and we want to invent this product with you. We want to work with you to bring this concept to reality, culminating in a Kickstarter campaign in the near future.

NASA's drought-predicting satellite is almost ready to begin work - engadget.com

blogger-avatarby Daniel Cooper | @danielwcooper

According to environmentalist Lester Brown, droughts are going to be increasingly prevalent over the next few years. At the same time that he was making these claims, however, NASA was activating a spacecraft that it's hoped will do something about that. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite is designed to orbit the Earth, measuring global moisture levels in soil.

With that data, the agency expects to predict what regions are at the highest risk of both droughts and flooding. ...more

Tea's benefits extend to old bones, Japanese researchers claim - AFP

Please note: This is an opinion piece and not intended as health advice. Some people cannot have tea, and in fact, it is harmful to them. We happen to love and enjoy it, so are grateful if there are healthy benefits included in addition to thirst-quenching, refreshing attributes. But be sure to check with your physician before you make any changes in lifestyle/diet...to be sure that they are right for you.

Researchers in Japan say black tea could help treat osteoporosis, a bone condition affecting older people, but admit you need to drink an awful lot of it.

Scientists say the humble brew contains an antioxidant that can prevent the loss of bone density commonly seen in old age that makes the elderly more vulnerable to fractures.

Ash Wednesday Feb 18 - Lent Begins Today and Ends Apr 2

In the Catholic, Episcopalian and other Christian Churches, today is the first day of Lent, a Season for Fasting, Praying, Reflecting, Giving Up Vices in spiritual and physical preparation for the Holy arrival of Easter. As most like to party hearty, the prelude to this somber season of the religious calendar includes the intense Revelry and Celebrations of Mardi Gras and Carnival.

Big Yang Theory: Chinese year of the sheep or the goat? AFP

AFP

China's coming lunar new year has stirred a debate over which zodiac creature is the correct one -- but Chinese folklorists dismiss the fixation on animals as missing the point.

Traditional astrology in China attaches different animal signs to each lunar year in a cycle of 12 years.

The symbol for the new year starting on February 19 is the "yang", which can refer to any member of the caprinae subfamily -- or even beyond -- depending on what additional Chinese character it is paired up with.

For example, a goat is a "mountain yang", a sheep is a "soft yang" and a Mongolian gazelle is a "yellow yang".

Both goats and sheep appear in Chinese new year paintings, paper-cuts and other festival decorations.

Folklorists say it does not matter which one is used since the zodiac sign was chosen for the Chinese character's auspicious connotation rather than the specific animal -- at least in the beginning....more
