Box Office: 'Guardians' Leading Sluggish Labor Day Weekend, Becomes No. 1 Film of Year - The Hollywood Reporter

Bye Bye Captain America! Hello Guardians!

By Pamela McClintock

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy has become the No. 1 film of the year to date at the North American box office, flying by fellow Marvel Studios superhero film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

The quirky tentpole, made by Marvel and Disney, took in an estimated $3.8 million on Friday, pushing its domestic total to $262.1 million (Winter Soldier earned $259.8 million). Globally, it has earned north of $500 million.

Guardians will easily rule the Labor Day holiday despite being in its fifth weekend. The movie has pulled off the biggest surprise in memory with its record-breaking performance, and has helped to shore up the ailing 2014 summer box office, although revenue is still down a...  Read More

Microgrids Are Coming, and They Could Change the World - Motley Fool

By Travis Hoium

As the cost of solar energy has fallen, it has opened up new markets that were once unimaginable in energy. Five years ago, it seemed impossible that a million homes in the U.S. could be powered by solar energy, but that's the goal of just one company -- SolarCity -- and it hopes to accomplish this goal by 2018.

As the cost of solar energy falls and new technologies like energy storage, smart meters, and demand response advance, new opportunities open up, like microgrids, which can create a self contained energy ecosystem. If designed right, microgrids can produce more renewable energy, cause less strain on the grid, and even provide technology that could change energy around the world.

What's a microgrid?
A microgrid is an electric grid that is much smaller than a city,...  Read More

Manatees may lose endangered species status - AP

Associated Press

As they do whenever they visit Florida, Greg Groff and his young daughter stopped by the manatee pool at Miami Seaquarium, where the speed bump-shaped marine mammals placidly swim in circles.

They noted the pink scars and disfigured tail on one manatee, damage from a boat propeller that left it unable to survive in the wild.

Florida's manatees need even more stringent protections than their listing on the federal endangered species list, Groff said, adding that boaters should go elsewhere if they don't like speed limits in waters where manatees swim.

Civil War Soldier Alonzo Cushing to receive Medal of Honor

Civil War soldier Alonzo Cushing to receive Medal of Honor
After 150 years, a hero from the Battle of Gettysburg will receive the Medal of Honor.

First Lt. Alonzo P. Cushing. (Wisconsin Historical Society)

WASHINGTON (UPI) - President Obama will award the Medal of Honor to an unusual recipient next month: Civil War Union soldier Alonzo H. Cushing.

The honor is the result of more than three decades of lobbying from Cushing's descendants and Civil War history fans who began a letter-writing campaign to then-Wisconsin Sen. William Proxmire.

Posthumous awards are typically only granted within two years of the act of heroism for which the honoree receives the award, but Congress granted an exemption last December for Cushing.

Feds protect 20 species of coral as threatened - AP

Associated Press

The federal government is protecting 20 types of colorful coral by putting them on the list of threatened species, partly because of climate change.

As with the polar bear, much of the threat to the coral species is because of future expected problems due to global warming, said David Bernhart, an endangered-species official at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. These coral species are already being hurt by climate change "but not to the point that they are endangered yet," he said.

Climate change is making the oceans warmer, more acidic and helping with coral diseases like bleaching — and those "are the major threats" explaining why the species were put on the threatened list, Bernhart said in a Wednesday conference call.

A Future Powered by Fusion Draws a Little Closer - Newsweek

By Roger Highfield

Within the next half century, scientists will build a fusion power plant to harness the same processes that make the sun shine. The moment this star winks on, life, economics and everything will change. That is what Cold War scientists said half a century ago when, after the uncontrolled release of fusion energy in hydrogen bombs, they took an interest in the controlled release of fusion energy in reactors. They’re still saying it today, only a number of companies are now working in a nuclear field that was once only the domain of superpowers. Are we approaching the Age of Fusion at long last?
