Do you think Furbies are Hot or Not? We thought they were so long ago gone! One daughter was at her storage unit recently and heard a weak cry, "Feed me. Feed me." So sad! It was her Furby from years ago.
Well, guess what? They are Baaack and in Hot Can't Get Enough of Them Style!! Why you may ask...well, there's an App for that! We admit that we have wanted to download the app and play, too.
Here is a little history, from the questionable sources on Wikipedia:
A Furby (plural Furbys or Furbies) is an electronic robotic toy resembling a hamster or owl-like creature which went through a period of being a "must-have" toy following its launch in the holiday season of 1998, with continual sales until 2000. Over 40 million Furbies were sold during the three years of its original production, with 1.8 million sold in 1998, and 14 million in 1999. Its speaking capabilities were translated into 24 languages.
Furbies were the first successful attempt to produce and sell a domestically-aimed robot. A newly purchased Furby starts out speaking entirely Furbish, the unique language that all Furbies use, but is programmed to start using English words and phrases in place of Furbish over time. This process is intended to resemble the process of learning English. In 2005, new Furbies were released, with voice-recognition and more complex facial movements, and many other changes and improvements. The Emoto-Tronic Furbies (Furby, Furby Baby, and Funky Furby) continued to be sold until late 2007, when these toys became extremely rare. An updated Furby is being sold as of September 2012 for the holiday season. ...more
Here is what we have learned:
The updated Furby is ongoing with new ones just made/released in late 2013 and more to come in 2014!
Teal and Pink ar still the most popular colors, but they are quickly losing ground to the new Furbies on the Block! Stripes, Zigzags, Polka Dots, Stars, Peacock Feathers, Ugly Christmas Sweater and many other designs are the rage!
The Black and White Zigzag one is popular with kids and adults!
They probably teach parenting, pet owner or good manners skills much better than the old babies that drank and then wet their diapers. If you are mean to your Furby, it learns that and reflects your annoying behavior in its responses to you. If you are nice, it is delightfully fun...and maybe so happy, that it spawns/hatches a new Baby Furbling!
Then the app will let the Furby and Furbling talk to each other! Thanks to a savvy Sales Rep, who nudged us toward Furbies (not quite the Victorian Dolls we were looking for!), as they have been in demand all over the world. The first Special Edition Teal one that we got in went to Peru, another to Norway, one to Brazil and many places in between. It is just so fun to know that this cute creature transcends so many borders....proving that everyone just wants to be loved!
