Update from The Democratic Republic of the Congo

This update on your loan to Elonga B Group was written in French by Kiva's Field Partner. It's been auto-translated into English, but if you'd like to see the untranslated version you can view it here.

The client is grateful for the loan, through the latter, she was able to increase its business and pay school fees for her children, despite the post-conflict situations in the region.

This update on your loan to Amigas De Lucciola (Santa Ana) Group was written in Spanish by Kiva's Field Partner. It's been auto-translated into English, but if you'd like to see the untranslated version you can view it here.

We went to visit Mrs. Ana and Group Credit Amigas De Lucciola. She lives in Canton Santa Ana known for its beautiful resorts freshwater. She is dedicated to raising pigs and chickens and uses the credit (that) was granted by Kiva to buy chickens, food and medicine for both chickens and for chachos. (She) tells us that she was fine and this gives the necessary (funds) to succeed, in regard to payments to us that had a delay because she was sick and could not cancel it properly but since then caught up and so expects to continue, as she has the group's most new credit waiting. As for her health tells us that she and her family are fine thank God. Her dreams are to have a larger farm. It was a pleasure to spend time with Ana and Credit Group. Thanks for support and support Fundación Espoir.

This update on your loan to Benkadi 1 Group was written in French by Kiva's Field Partner. It's been auto-translated into English, but if you'd like to see the untranslated version you can view it here.

The BENKADI one group is composed of ten women, as expected, the loan invested in growing peanut winter was satisfactory.

Mrs. Safoura with this loan, I reached my goals were to purchase 3 bags of 50 kg of fertilizer, herbicide and three cans of pay for labor for maintaining 0.75 hectare.

As expected I found a level of increased business, leading as a profit.

The loan also allowed me to realize my satisfaction with activities planned.

I intend to contribute in the daily expenditure of the family after the sale of my goods. That with profits.

I think Soro Yiriwaso is created to help people who are in need.

So we happily invested these funds in another aspiring artist in Haiti, even with the alerts about possible repayment issues - noted at the end:

Marie Solange

Marie Solange attended small art fairs with her parents in her childhood. After every fair, she would try to reproduce every single thing she saw. So, with her own creative spirit she started to make decorative art. In 2005, she decided to register her business and appeared in a fair held in Port-au-Prince.

Marie Solange finds pleasure in making decorative art with coconut shells. She also produces picture frames, small and large decorative panels, lamp bases, candlesticks, flower pots, etc. She makes cabinets and other household items for home and office. Today, to better satisfy the customers’ demand, the business needs a second loan to buy more raw materials such as paint, paintbrushes, and polish.

Additional Information

More information about this loan

This loan could be made to a small and growing business (SGB) or a cooperative.  Please note that due to the risky nature of lending to SGBs and cooperatives, a market segment that is generally not served by microfinance organizations, Zafèn loans carry a significantly higher level of repayment risk than most other Kiva loans. The program has a repayment target of 70%, well below that of Fonkoze’s other portfolios. Lenders who choose to fund Zafèn loans should be aware of this risk.

About Fonkoze - Zafèn:

Fonkoze is Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, offering a full range of financial and development services to Haiti’s rural poor. Zafèn is a program created by Fonkoze to provide soft loans, training and support for small and growing businesses in Haiti. Soft loans are loans that are below the market rate of interest.

Zafèn loans are now crowd funded on Kiva, which will reduce website maintenance costs for Fonkoze and allow more Zafèn loans to be funded faster. It will also allow the program to cover more of its costs and move towards self-sufficiency.

More details and information on the projects are available on www.zafen.org
