Yesterday was the clothing drive for our local chapter of the National Kidney Foundation. We support them strongly, as they support so, so, so many all over the US with this debilitating disease. But this time, they gave us something, too! A brochure, outlining the facts, which are more dire than we had known.
We have worked for many years with Christmas Wish Program/Project Hawaii, to help the homeless and abused Keiki and their families, mostly moms. It is still with such poignancy that we recall how one lady just almost hysterically wrote to all of us other volunteers, saying she could not help at all, as there was an EPIDEMIC of Kidney Disease that she was trying to fight. Yes, she worked for the National Kidney Foundation on the Big Island. The panic in her messages seemed like someone who was just trying to back off of one too many commitments.
But after seeing the challenges first hand with our brother, Neill, we get it! It is daunting. So here for you are the Risk Factors to look for in yourself or a loved one:
~ High Blood Pressure
~ Family History of Kidney Failure
~ Age 60 or over
~ Black American, Hispanic, Asian, American Indian or Pacific Islander
If you have any of these factors, please see your doctor and get tested!
There are no early symptoms of kidney disease. The only way to detect it is to be tested.
