A Bird in Hand

I was in the process of listing these two little brooches here in Addoway when they sold in my Etsy shop.  I have never sold anything quite that fast before!  It took less than 10 minutes....

Although the ad for the brooches will not go onto this site, I wanted to put the first paragraph of the ad here in my blog.  It just voices some of my thoughts and concerns for us, as a people....

Where are the birds going? I am listening to birds singing outside my windows right now. It is raining outside, a very gentle spring rain, and I know they like that. But, I also know that on any day, sunny or wet, it is very possible that I will stop walking because of the deathly quiet about me. There have been so many times in the last few years when I could not hear a bird singing. It is a very strange, eerily silent, quiet.

I believe that these two little bird brooches are hand-carved...  Read More

Celluloid?

There are lots and lots of times when I really do just have to guess at what it is I have.  This is one of those times.  There are a few clues, which the two cabinet card photographs present to me outside of the simple fact that they are Victorian era cabinet card photographs.

This first was taken at "The Penton Studio" in London.  A lovely portrait of a young Victorian woman.  The photograph is not flat, but rather a kind of a square 'bubble' mounted on the card.

The second photograph, also taken at Penton Studio, also has this 'celluloid-like' square bubble with just the outside edge of the photograph glued down to the card backing.

I think you can see what I mean in this third photo.

On the back of this card (the first card has a blank backing) is wording which leads me to believe that their are negatives for this photograph:  "Copies may be had at any time." ...  Read More

End of Semester Happiness...

Well, sort of....  I need my grades still so it is more relief that exams are over than actual ecstatic happiness.

However, having the tests over for the next while does mean a bit more time to get those 289 items categorized!  I have been working on it.  Pecking away at it since I opened shop here.  It only takes a few minutes each time I check in here but it is a big job!

Any other middle-aged students here?  Or students of any age?  I've been selling online for about six or seven years now and I've found that the balancing act can be challenging - and worth it!

I have opened an album of stunning cabinet card portraits to list this week.  If you are looking for period clothing and craft ideas, cards like these can delight and inspire!

"Right now we are listing two massive collections: vintage postcards and vintage jewelry - with lots of antique pieces in the mix. Are you collecting something? Or, looking for something special for someone special? Send me a note, maybe I just haven't listed it yet.... Leslie"
