Destination Shopping


When I go online to buy something I recognize that there are times when I ask myself the question "Is this venue the place I want to be at right now?"  I am not someone who will casually travel long distances to go shopping at a brick and mortar venue where part of the buying experience includes spending hours and hours there as entertainment, rather than simply the act of purchasing goods.

A great example of a fixed "real life" shopping destination that I would go to however is New York City, but for me a trip like that would be maybe a once-in-a-decade type event and would be anything but casual or lightly planned.  I have always wanted to see the Naked Cowboy perform in Times Square and became a super huge fan of his when I found out he was running for President in 2012.  Also, I really have a soft spot in my heart for New York City after 9-11...  Read More

$10 Scratch Offs, Jenny's Number and Sunk Costs

The value I receive when I buy something is in part due to my understanding of the fallacy of sunk costs. These are the costs that businesses refer to when the topic of throwing good money after bad comes up.  I recognize that no matter who you are or how you spend your money some time or another you are going to have the "Gotcha" moment of suddenly realizing no matter what you do in the future you are not going to get your money back on what you just bought.  My favorite time like that occurs when someone buys a scratch off lottery ticket, finds out they lost and wishes they had that buying decision to do over.  The interesting thing to me about sunk costs is this: the decision on what to do in the future has absolutely nothing to do with what you just paid for something.
