BargainBasement, a simple name for a simple reason

Ever since I was a small girl growing up only a few miles outside of our Nation's capitol Washington, D.C., I have fond memories of walking the sidewalks of the big stores viewing the large moving displays at Christmastime.  Moving Santas, reindeer, elves, snow and Christmas music all filling the cold night air with excitement and wonder.

Just as everyone else, times were tough for our family and Christmas presents were few. We could each hope for one or two presents, but one of them had to be something practical like a dress or new pair of shoes.  Our Christmas stockings always contained apples, oranges, nuts and a few pieces of those fancy colorful hard sugar candies.

Other than Christmas time, there were two other special occasions that warranted a trip on the bus to shop the large department stores; when they had their large advertised spring and fall sales just before re-stocking their summer and winter wares. All of the bargains would be in each of the store's large basements. I can close my eyes and see the large sign hanging at the top of the down staircase with the large red arrow under the words "Bargain Basement."  The quality of the merchandise was always top notch and the prices rock bottom. It was always exciting to anticipate finding something I wanted and that my mom could afford! Because of these fond memories, it seemed a natural for me to choose the name BargainBasement for my online selling with the promise to sell only quality items at the best bargain price.

Love it - have very similar memories, except the big shopping trip was to the small town that was a little bigger than my small town! Enjoyed!

I love the story of how you named your online store. I don't remember seeing any "bargain basements" in any stores when I was growing up.... of course I was in the midwest, so I suppose things were not the same.

I could have written this, I was born in D.C. Loved going downtown to see the Christmas windows, except we rode the streetcar. My mother worked at the Hecht Company and on Friday payday my brothers and I would meet Mum when she got off and did the bargain basements, the dimes stores and and eat at People's Drugstore, my aunt worked there. I loved the 5 and 10 s best!

I can certainly relate to this, sounds like the Christmas's we had when I was little and I have shopped in so many bargain basements in my lifetime. Christmas is my favorite time of the year and I have so enjoyed reading this, very good!

Always enjoy the sentiments. We too had Bargain Basement clothing and loved it. Our choice was Filene's Basement in Boston. It was a special day to go in there with my Mom and Aunts. It's why I do what I do I think. Just being able to provide for people in some small way. Loved your blog.
