40 Tips to Start Selling More Online Today

Always looking to improve your sales? Looking for those missing ingredients in your eCommerce business? Well last summer I shared some top eCommerce tips that I felt would help you start selling more online, but since then I have uncovered even more and I wanted to revisit them and add more just for you. There is so much information out there that you can really find yourself getting lost, so I decided to put together this list to help with some really important ones.

So are you ready??? Well here we go:

  1. Always, think like your customer - you are a buyer too. Ask yourself: “What do I need?” Then deliver exactly that and nothing less…ever!

  3. Add a picture of yourself or your home office to your profile page. Go a little further and add a YouTube video – Show your personality. Don’t be shy! You have nothing to lose.
  4. Make your profile page as much about you as possible. Utilize blogging features like Addoway provides you and talk about your passions and hobbies. Use video features. Link up your social networking sites. Check out: The Now Project
  5. Please make sure you spell check – check your lists twice and then when you are done, check it again.
  6. Listen to your customers and invite their comments. Appreciate their feedback and candor and thank them for taking the time to tell you what they thought.
  7. Provide superior customer service – it’s as simple as that.
  8. Learn how to use a photo editing software to ensure your pictures are accurate and clear – you can download Picasa 3.8 from Google.
  9. If you have a business phone number, then add it to your profile page. If you have a number, but don’t want to add it, then why do you have a phone number?
  10. Send thank you cards with orders to your first time buyers. That personal touch goes a long way. Sometimes send thank you gifts if you can afford them.

  12. Make sure you use and test the products you sell. You have to believe in what you are providing to your clients.
  13. Have promotional offers or specific days where you have discounts to drive traffic and then share this information throughout Facebook and Twitter. Use the coupon functionality to your liking, test and GET CREATIVE!
  14. Always think about the 3 P’s:  Product, Price, and Promotion and make it visible.
  15. Reply back to customer questions and concerns within 12 hours. The sooner the better. No longer than 24.
  16. SHIP FAST! As soon as the order goes through, get it out the door.
  17. Understand stock issues if you are a drop shipper. Know your inventory if you have it in house. If you are looking for suppliers check out our partner Salehoo
  18. Send your customers the tracking numbers twice if you can. Nothing puts a buyer at ease more than receiving a thank you email with a tracking number inside.
  19. Under Promise, Over Communicate and Over Deliver!
  20. Be consistent, don’t make buying from you confusing – Keep it Simple!
  21. Be patient – success takes time; make a friend and have an advocate for life.
  22. Make the font on your product descriptions readable 12pt at least and please no weird fonts.
  23. Offer a really good no questions asked return policy where applicable. You know the saying, “The customer is always right!”
  24. Don’t tell people you are new to eCommerce – this invites spammers and scammers and no one wants that.
  25. Continue to treat your great customers well. They will likely want to buy from you again, so offer those repeat purchase discounts, reply to them faster and keep them coming back for more.
  26. Treat your customers like you treat your friends.   27. Make friends with other sellers: On Addoway we believe in community even if we don’t have a forum on our website. We believe in open engagement on our Facebook Fan Page and we want people to make friends. Nothing better than working with friends all day.

  29. Open up a Twitter account and start building a follower base. You can go to and follow people who have interests in the same things you do.   30. Give more than you expect to receive. It might sound weird, but trust me. You will receive more in the end than you could have ever imagined.
  31. Be positive. No one ever said this was going to be easy and if they did it was probably on an infomercial and you shouldn’t have believed them anyway. Success takes time, but as long as you believe in yourself and what you are setting out to do, no one will stop you.
  32. Grab a partner to work with. You know the song, “One is the loneliest number?” Well it’s true. Two people are always better than one. Remember 1+1 = 3 if you work together.
  33. Utilize your email lists to keep your buyers informed on new products, new specials, contests, giveaways and company updates. At Addoway we use Madmimi for our email campaigns.
  34. Give back: There are so many less fortunate people in the world and I am firm believer that you have to give in order to receive.
  35. Be Active: Get active in forums, discussion groups and blogging platforms.
  36. When you are online make sure you listen a lot more than you promote. Keep it simple and don’t promote right away or even all the time. It’s important to build relevancy among your audience and have them begin asking you what you do and why you do it rather than you just start telling them. Listen, listen, listen, chime in and then sell.
  37. Understand your market. If you sell handbags or anything fashionable, you should try to understand the current fashion trends. If you sell electronics you should know about the newest technologies and not be afraid to blog about it. People want to know what you think. Trust me!
  38. Pivot and adapt to change: Yes it’s a term that has begun to get overplayed, but simply put – don’t be afraid to change ideas or change directions if your business calls for it. Sometimes you might have to change product lines, change prices, change discounts, change partners, investors, everything. If you can adapt to change you will be just fine.
  39. Stand out amongst the crowd! More and more people are turning to sites like eBay, Amazon and Addoway to try to make it on their own. What makes you different? Why should they buy from you? For answers, please re-read the previous 38 tips.
  40. Lastly, Have Fun!  smiley_with_thumbs_up.gif There is no enjoyment in doing anything that you can’t truly enjoy doing!
The key is to just concentrate on one tip at a time. Don’t get too caught up doing too much at once. Pick one for each day or every week and just go from there. The key here is the value you show your customers. Show them value beyond anything they have ever received before and they will talk about you to their friends and the cycle will only continue from there. Is there a way we can add a YouTube video to our profile page, or even better on the storefront page where it says Meet the Seller?

You can add a youtube video in your profile. Go to My Addoway, click on Edit Profile and then click on Video. If you want to display a video on your profile, you may do so by entering a valid YouTube URL or YouTube member username. Entering a username will import any videos published by that user. You will then be able to select one from any of the videos available.
