4 things to consider when bringing your product or service to market

Too many times researchers are thinking about the next big idea that will revolutionize the way we do business. They want to take big risks, because they dream big.

They also look to design the product or service and launch only when they are 100% sure it is done. Don’t mean to burst your bubble here, but let me tell you something - it will never be done. Why?

Because your product and service needs to be tested, accepted and used, then corrected, tested again, and then tested some more before it is 100% complete. Only a handful of companies have been able to get it right the first time. This is the reason most companies go beta first, sometimes private beta and then public beta. They take their time tweaking their idea, carefully listening to user feedback and making adjustments where needed.

However, it is imperative that you don’t wait too long to introduce your creation to market, but when you ready there are 4 things you should consider when bringing it to market: Value, adoptability, likeability and acceptability.

Value

In a world so caught up in price negotiations and appearance; we have lost sight of what has always mattered most: value.

It is the most important aspect of bringing anything new to market. When I say value, I really mean VALUE. Not how much it is worth, but how important it is to people.

What is your product or services value? What does it solve? Prevent? Create? And most importantly, why can’t people live without it? You need to be sure it solves a problem and fulfills a need that is void without it. Do people need it or want it?

Adoptability

You can test all day and night, but if you are not thinking about its adoptability you are missing out on the bigger picture here. Will people use your product or service? Are you making it user friendly? What questions does it answer? Again, what problems does it solve?

Likeability

It is as easy as asking yourself whether or not the product or service will be welcomed. Will people like to use it and enjoy it? As you can see value plays a part in all 4 of the necessary aspects your product or service should possess.

Acceptability

How will users react to accepting your product or service? Is it too far ahead of its time or can it be used today? Don’t try to be revolutionary all at one time. It is ok to evolve over time and make progress and enhancements slowly, so that users will be more prone to accepting it.

Sometimes it is as easy as taking what you currently have and making some slight adjustments and creating something new that will be easily reviewed and accepted. You don’t have to go overboard and create something that has never been seen before. What if people don’t know how to use it? Look at the new movie Avatar. James Cameron took over 10 years to film it not just because the technology wasn’t there; but most importantly because it was too far ahead for its time. It would not have been adopted, liked, or accepted. No one cared for its value at the time, but they do today.

Sometimes the best way to a solution is just taking one step at a time even if those steps take years.
