Great story! Personally, he wouldn't have had to ask me twice to move from Las Vegas to rural Missouri. I was raised on SAC military bases and love the isolation. I've lived in 3 big cities Providence, RI, not by my choice; Converse, TX, which was being and is now swallowed by San Antonio; and Garland which has the same problem as Converse only it's part of Dallas. After 6 yrs in Converse, 9 yrs in Providence and 1 yr in Garland, I am out in rural north Texas. I love rural life!

I grew up on a tobacco farm on the East Coast in the state of Maryland, so I know what rural is, or I thought I did, until I moved to my current location here in Hawaii. This area where I am is like the last of the true Pioneers, man. My hat's off to anyone who raises children on their own, and I enjoyed reading about it. Thanks for sharing.

Laughing! I am still called LORI LYNN by so many of my family! I love rural life. I too left it when I was old enough but came right back later. And am raising my family here. I smile when I hear then saying they are going far away when they get old enough, those words spoken by every generation! I always respond, well, before you leave, make sure to mark on the land map what piece you really love so it will be your spot when you return. :)

Nice to know more about you Paula Dean -- seems like you left Las Vegas just as I was arriving!! I ended up coming to live here right after 9/11 - just when you moved away.

Great blog, Paula Dean! I also grew up rural - Northern NY. The part that's closer to Montreal than any US city! Lots of time to just think back then! Thanks for sharing!

Loved the story, Paula Dean, and can relate to a lot of it. I also like St. Louise and particularly St.Charles. My son/wife lived there a lot of years and we used to go several times a year (from central Kansas).
