Keep Calm and Be Quiet

Keep Calm.  The Quiet Car is quite nice.

Not being a traveler, I was a bit confused when entering a ‘quiet car’ on Amtrak
for a trip from Boston to New York for the Christmas holiday.

Since this was going to be a four-hour trip, there was a host of snacks carefully packed.  Never one to be unprepared,  I had an assortment of melon, prosciutto, rolled up polish ham, roast beef, crackers, cheddar cheese, goat cheese, crusty bread and blue cheese.  I forgot the blueberries and apple slices at home.  I envisioned setting the snacks on the table.  Oops, there was no table.  Hmm…

As I prepared to sit down across the aisle from my family, the woman who would be next to me started telling a family with kids that this was in no uncertain terms, a QUIET CAR.  Yikes.  From that point on, I was a...  Read More

Mallomars the cookies you remember during the holidays

Mallomars, the traditional northeast cookie that is manufactured for late fall and winter.
It's really the start of the Christmas season when the Mallomars start hitting the grocery store shelves.
(now SOLD OUT)
RoyalPresence_1_484f07.png

  • Introduced in 1913, is a northeast favorite amongst generations.
  • Only regionally and seasonally available
  • Marshmallow center and graham cracker crust
  • Pure chocolate coating
There's an old New York Times (NYT) article entitled "The Cookie that Comes out in the Cold" that refers to the beloved cookies as "old as the Federal Reserve System and Camel cigarettes."

Their debut was 1913 and originated in New Jersey.  Some like the Whippets, a Canadian version similar to Mallomars better.  Here's one person's review.   The Whippets are much less expensive and are readily...  Read More

A Polish Christmas Tradition

I am not Polish but married into the culture and tradition.  One of the things they do is
to pass around the oplatki.

RoyalPresence_1_60e477.png

The Star of Bethlehem is the most popular Christmas symbol.
Christmas is known as Gwiazda, or "Little Star.".

The first star in the Christmas Eve sky signals the end of a
day long fast of Wigilia, and celebrations begin.

Before the Christmas Eve meal is served, the head of the house
distributes an oplatki (peace wafer) symbolizing friendship and
peace.  A straw-strewn place setting is reserved for the f
humble Christ.  Decorations include an elaborate creche and chionka
(Christmas tree) decorated with star stars, fruit, nuts,
cookies and intricately painted eggs.  Often young men carry
a lighted star on a pole en route to Pasterka (Shepherd's Mass)
at midnight Christmas Eve.

We actually did this...  Read More

Christmas in July

Christmas in July

Slide1.JPG
From July 10, 2012
It’s fun and generates good cheer, but how did it get started?

I remember as a girl at a YMCA Camp, we had a Christmas in July party and made Christmas ornaments and celebrated.  I became curious as we now have online special sales for a Christmas in July.
see video

On Wikipedia:
“The earliest known occasion to make the phrase Christmas in July literal was in July 1933 at Camp Keystone, a girl's summer camp in North Carolina, which celebrated with a Christmas tree, gifts, and a visit by Santa Claus.[2] In 1935, the National Recreation Association's journal Recreation described what a Christmas in July was like at a girl's camp, writing that "all mystery and wonder surround this annual event."[3]
There are many more traditions in America .  The US Postal Service  along with...  Read More

From Good Old Summertime
July is for Fun in the Sun we all know.  But, did you know it's also a great time to get
the best deals on Christmas gifts, presents, menu ideas, decorations and holiday essentials?  When summer is over (oh, perish the thought), the Christmas and Holiday Season begins a fanatical rush.  While you are thinking of back-to-school perhaps or your ordinary day to day routine, the stock is on the store shelves.  Savvy consumers will shop early, get the best bang for their buck.  The 'early bird gets the worm', an old adage is so true.

The pinterest board for addoway Christmas in July sellers is here.

When October/November rolls around, good stuff is nearly gone.  Stores aren't stocking heavy overload anymore.  Christmas in July makes so much sense to...  Read More

From my little house on the prairie to yours

Slide1.JPG
From America, the Beautiful
From my little house on the prairie to yours.  I finally got an American Flag Pole installed on the front of my house.  It's been about ten years since I had a flag.  Previously there was a flag hung vertically inside the door.  I never knew that the vinyl siding had a little wood behind it to get the pole installed.  Today, a handyman was a blessing when he came by the house with a new flag and pole, installed it and voila!
