Knee Patches and a Food Processor

When my first son was young, Sears sold nice looking long pants for boys that had reinforced knees that were guaranteed not to tear or wear out. Their promise in the promotion was that if the knees did wear out or tear, all the buyer had to do was return them to Sears for a new pair.  In a little less than six months, I exchanged pants with worn out and/or torn knees at least six times.  I was not surprised when Sears discontinued that promotion (grin).  Thanks to that Sears promotion, I learned how important it is to save store receipts and/or the actual damaged item(s).

I save receipts (up to 2 years) for all of my small and large appliances, furniture, electronics and any one item of clothing that costs over $20.  Just last month, the motor in my top of the line food processor froze. I had paid $169 two years ago and still had the original receipt, the book and the actual box it had been packed in.  It was easy to make a short trip to the department store and exchange for new food processor without a hitch.

Most stores will exchange items if you can prove you bought the item there, have the damaged item itself, have the original receipt, original box and instruction booklet.  For some, this may be a not enough room to store these items issue, but if you can.....  I also save my grocery store receipts for at least one month. It may seem like a bit of a “chore” to keep receipts, but if you set up a way to save your receipts in an organized manner, you can save your family a great deal of money. Over the past 30 years, our family has saved hundreds of dollars this way.

Excellent Reminder, Sandy, thank you! I desperately need to get better at this...and actually Return items that fail or don't fit...like the ink cartridge 3 pack that I bought at Costco that didn't fit. They don't necessarily need the receipt if they can look it up on your account...but most other stores do need it (course, if I hadn't waited 2 years to return it, it wouldn't have expired-whoopsie)

I save it all. A box under my desk in the corner. Most think it is insane, I have pulled it and pulled from it many a time as needed. I seal the box at the end of the year, place it into the attic for 3 years. I rotate out boxes every few years and before having a easily started bon fire with hotdogs and marshmellows, we go through the box, save anything that seems it just needs to be saved longer then start the fire and enjoy the hour together.

Lordy, Sandy. Are you sure you didn't know my husband??????? He kept everything. I was going through a drawer a few months ago, looking for a user manual. Twenty years old, but I had it. We bought our furniture in 1969. I still have the receipts. Try buying a house full of furniture these days for $2839.00. Good blog.

Oh I always wish that I had receipts when something happens but have never been good at saving them...the personal ones. I save every receipt for purchases that I sell on the net and keep books for that but could be better at my household ones.

Good thinking. I used to keep everything but don't as much anymore because we are trying to lighten our clutter load.

I once returned a Coleman tent to Wal-Mart after living in it all summer and it was shredding. I had the receipt to show that it only lasted about 4 months before it shredded. I save a lot of receipts, but not everything. Good post.

Loved Sears Toughskins! I stopped my son from being quite as hard on them by putting him in shorts one day! He learned how to play on the cement patio w/out scooting on his knees! LOL
